A man posing as a medical doctor at has been arrested for allegedly defrauding unsuspecting patients and their caregivers.
The suspect, identified as Moses Okello, was arrested on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at around 10:00am from the hospital’s female surgical ward following a joint operation by the hospital security team and the .
According to hospital management, Okello allegedly impersonated a medical officer and approached a patient’s caregiver, claiming he could fast-track a surgical procedure.
In a statement, the hospital said the suspect solicited Shs500,000 from the caregiver, claiming the money would facilitate a “quick medical procedure.”
“He reportedly insisted that he be given a deposit of Shs200,000 before working on the patient, with the remaining balance to be paid later,” the hospital stated.
However, the caregiver became suspicious and reported the matter to the hospital’s security team.
“The caregiver reported the matter to our security team who alerted the Police, leading to his arrest immediately after receiving the money,” the hospital said.
The case has been registered at Lira City Central Police Station under reference number 32/26/02/2026. Police have preferred charges of theft of cash and impersonation against the suspect.
“We shall collaborate with the Police and render all necessary support to ensure that justice is served,” the hospital management said.
Hospital authorities revealed that this is not an isolated incident.
“The Management would like to inform the public that within the month of February 2026, we have arrested more than five people under similar circumstances,” the statement noted.
The hospital reassured the public that security has been strengthened to curb such fraudulent activities.
“Our security is on 24-hour alert aided by CCTV surveillance to ensure safety of our dear patients, hospital assets and visitors,” management said.
The hospital has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals demanding money in exchange for medical services.
“Please report to the Hospital authorities such cases from time to time as we make Lira Regional Referral Hospital better for all,” the statement concluded.
Authorities have warned patients and caregivers to always make payments through official hospital channels and avoid dealing with individuals who claim to offer shortcuts to medical services.
