Airtel Money has partnered with the Virunga Gorilla Marathon as the official and exclusive payment provider, introducing Merchant Pay as the sole mode of transaction for marathon-related purchases.
The partnership is aimed at accelerating Uganda’s transition toward a cashless economy by promoting the adoption of digital payments.
Under the arrangement, all marathon kit purchases will be made exclusively through Airtel Money Merchant Pay, a move expected to enhance convenience, security, and transparency for runners, vendors, and surrounding communities.
Speaking at the launch, Hope Ekudu, Head of Operations at Airtel Money, described the partnership as a milestone in advancing digital financial solutions.
“At Airtel Money, we believe the future of financial transactions is digital, driven by simplicity, accessibility, and convenience. This partnership brings that vision to life on a trusted and impactful platform,” Ekudu said.
“This marathon is something to be proud of. It is more than a race; it is a platform that brings people together, promotes tourism, and uplifts communities. At Airtel, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that not only celebrate Uganda’s heritage but also contribute to the well-being of communities and their people,” she added.
Ekudu noted that the collaboration will also strengthen digital financial inclusion by enabling participants from across Uganda and beyond to adopt cashless payment methods.
“This collaboration also advances digital financial inclusion by enabling runners from across Uganda and beyond to embrace cashless payments. At the same time, it supports more sustainable practices by reducing reliance on paper and physical transactions, aligning with the conservation spirit of the Virunga Marathon,” she said.
The 2026 edition of the marathon will feature races across multiple categories, including 6km, 10km, 21km, and the full 42km marathon. The event is scheduled to take place on May 30, 2026.
Commenting on the partnership, Kenneth Kamukama Rashid, Team Lead for the Virunga Marathon, welcomed the collaboration, noting its potential to improve efficiency and accessibility.
“We thank Airtel Money for always being innovative and for creating solutions that enhance flexibility and convenience. We believe this partnership will significantly boost kit sales due to its ease of use. It also enables us to improve access to running kits and better track transactions,” he said.
“Our runners will experience an unforgettable challenge as they pass through rainforests, rolling hills, and ancient lava fields, while also engaging with the warmth and hospitality of local communities,” he added.
