Ministry of Education Trains 40 Science Teachers in ICT to Revolutionize Science Education
In a drive to modernize science education, the Ministry of Education and Sports, through the Uganda Secondary Education Expansion program, has trained 40 science teachers from Adjumani and Moyo districts in advanced ICT skills.
The five-day training, hosted at St. Mary Assumpta Secondary School, focused on integrating technology into science teaching. Teachers were equipped with digital tools aimed at enhancing lesson delivery and student engagement in science subjects such as mathematics, biology, physics, and chemistry.
Alex Opono, an ICT teacher at St. Mary Assumpta Girls Secondary School, commended the initiative: “We are thrilled to have hosted this groundbreaking training. Airtel and UNICEF’s support has been invaluable, providing seamless internet connectivity and computers.”
St. Mary Assumpta Girls SS is one of more than 70 schools across Uganda benefiting from a partnership between Airtel and UNICEF.
The partnership aims to enhance digital learning by providing internet access and upgrading school computer rooms with laptops and desktops, enabling teachers and students to access free online learning tools. This initiative extends across 13 African countries where Airtel operates.
The training, conducted by lecturers from Makerere University Business School, covered essential topics such as embracing the digital shift in education, utilizing ICT teaching tools, and creating visual learning materials. Participants explored platforms like PowerPoint, Articulate, PowToon, Audacity, and Video Editor, with mock presentations helping refine their skills.
Airtel Uganda ensured continuous internet access, allowing teachers to engage with online learning management systems and digital educational tools, further enriching their training experience.
Manoj Murali, Managing Director of Airtel Uganda, highlighted the partnership’s long-term goals “By connecting teachers to digital tools, we are empowering them to inspire a love of learning and ignite curiosity in their students. This ICT boot camp marks a significant step towards a more technologically advanced, globally competitive education system, and we are honored to be part of it.”
The initiative is expected to have a lasting impact, transforming science education in Uganda by fostering a more interactive and technologically driven learning environment.
