The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party will tomorrow, Tuesday, May 6, conduct elections for its internal party structures and LC1 chairperson flag bearers across all 72,000 villages in the country.
This was confirmed in an announcement made by President Museveni, who emphasized the importance of the exercise to all party members and supporters.
“Country men and women, especially the Bazzukulu, on Tuesday May 6, the NRM party will conduct elections for internal party structures and for LC1 chairpersons flag bearers,” he said.
President Museveni stressed that these elections will be conducted nationwide on Tuesday, May 6.
He also revealed that in addition to the elections, the party will organize Barazas in every village. These gatherings will be used to audit the party’s voter registers.
“During the event, we will also hold Barazas to audit our voter registers by reading out the names of registered members and moving those who have passed away or have relocated to other places,” President Museveni said.
He added that the Barazas will provide an opportunity to correct any mistakes in the registers to ensure their accuracy.
Museveni further explained that the Barazas will also be used to update party registers with additional information such as phone numbers and National Identification Numbers (NINs).
Highlighting the nature of the election process, the President said it will be a direct election where every member has the right to vote.
“The village assembly will now elect, although they have used the word ‘Electoral College’ but actually it will be direct election, because everybody will vote. It will be one person, one vote.”
He clarified that voting will be done by lining up behind the preferred candidates, and proxy voting will not be allowed.
“Proxy voting is not permitted. You cannot have someone else vote on your behalf. You must be present to vote in person,” President Museveni said.
The President called upon all NRM members and leaders to actively take part in the electoral exercise and attend the Barazas in their respective villages.
“I urge all the Bazzukulu and NRM leaders to actively participate in the Balazs within their villages, all members should arrive at their village centers by 10am on May 6, 2025 to engage in these activities.”
He revealed that he will personally participate in the process from his home village in Rwakitura, while the First Lady will also be in her village in Irenga, Ntungamo.
