Buganda Kingdom has reminded the central government to honour its obligation to pay its longstanding debt.

Records show government owes Buganda, over shs700 billion, most of which is in rent arrears on land and buildings occupied by government entities across the kingdom.

While addressing the 33rd Buganda Lukiiki( parliament), Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga emphasized that the kingdom’s development efforts are being  frustrated by financial constraints.

“Our work as a kingdom is often stalled due to lack of sufficient funds, yet the government still holds money that rightfully belongs to us. We urge the central government to treat this as a matter of urgency and release our funds,” he said.

He further revealed that on Friday, May 2, representatives from the Kingdom and the central government held a meeting to discuss the matter.

The government, represented by Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, pledged to pay part of the outstanding debt. The Kingdom’s delegation was led by Christopher Bwanika, the institution’s attorney general.

“We are hopeful that the government will honor its promise to pay a portion of the funds they owe us,” the Katikkiro added.
