NUP’s presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has pledged to push for the compensation of families in Teso who lost their cattle during the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency, describing the matter as long-overdue justice.
Speaking to a massive crowd in Soroti on Thursday, Bobi Wine said the suffering of the people of Teso has been sustained by decades of unfulfilled promises from the ruling regime.
“The NUP will push for your compensation for all the cattle that you lost during the LRA insurgency,” he said.
Bobi Wine vowed to end what he described as 30 years of empty promises by the NRM government, urging the people of Soroti to vote for him if they want their long-standing demands finally fulfilled.
“For the past three decades, the regime has been feeding you on lies and empty promises.”
He aligned himself with the region’s ongoing “No Cow, No Vote” protest, saying it reflects a broader national rejection of corruption and poor governance.
“We concur with the ‘no cow, no vote’ protest because it corroborates with our national protest vote,” he said. “We are saying no to corruption, nepotism, unemployment for our youths, and a sickly health sector.”
Bobi Wine argued that failure to compensate cattle losses crippled household incomes and undermined the economic foundation of Teso, leaving many young people without opportunities.
He said an NUP-led government would prioritise restorative justice for communities affected by conflict and state neglect.
The NUP leader thanked the people of Soroti for what he described as overwhelming support, urging them to turn their historical grievances into political action.
“Thank you, Soroti, for the massive support,” he said, as the crowd erupted in applause.
