A fatal road accident involving a CAF-branded bus assigned to the Uganda Cranes national football team has claimed the life of a Boda Boda rider along the Northern Bypass near Kisasi Flyover.
The crash occurred on Tuesday, at around 3:00 PM, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police.
Preliminary police findings indicate that the orange King Long bus, registration number UA 19059AA, was being driven by Khalid Ahmed when it swerved to avoid an oncoming trailer, subsequently veering into the path of a motorcycle bearing registration UFB 122F, and fatally hitting the rider.
“The driver of the bus reportedly swerved to avoid a collision with an oncoming trailer, but in the process knocked a Boda Boda rider, who died on the spot,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed. His body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Both the bus and the motorcycle have been impounded and are currently held at Kira Road Police Station, pending technical inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV).
Police say a full investigation is underway to establish the circumstances leading to the accident.
“We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and urge all road users to exercise maximum caution while on the road,” ASP Owoyesigyire added.
As of the time of publication, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and the Uganda Cranes have not released an official statement regarding the incident. It also remains unclear whether any players or team staff were on board at the time.
Police have pledged to provide additional details as investigations progress.
