The marriage between NBS news anchor Canary Mugume and wife Sasha Ferguson has erupted into public view after both parties released emotional statements accusing each other of abuse, neglect and manipulation.
The public fallout began when Sasha posted a series of Instagram messages confirming that the couple is “not still together,” alleging years of domestic violence and suppression.
“Those days every inner person I ran to seeking for help told me to sssshhh because someone else’s image would be more at stake than my life,” she wrote. “Yes, it was also normalised that women go through these things every day… I was always the villain in a well-crafted story.”
She claimed one incident was so severe that she feared for her life.
“At some point after a serious beating… a statement was made: ‘People love me, no one is going to believe you.’ That’s when I knew I was on my own and the only one fighting to protect the children.”
Sasha said she left the marriage with almost nothing following her father’s death in January.
“I had to start life from zero with just me, my children, our clothes and a few pink little things. I traded everything else for peace even though most of it was mine.”
She urged her followers not to attack Mugume.
“Please don’t judge him because he is only human. We all are. No one is a saint from heaven.”
She also asked the public to stop tagging him in her posts, saying they are now on different life paths.
Sasha ended her message with encouragement to women facing abuse: “Your life matters and your children need to grow up in a healthy environment.”
In response, Mugume posted a lengthy statement on X rejecting the allegations and saying he had been unfairly portrayed as an abuser.
“There’s been an attempt to label me an abuser and an irresponsible father,” he wrote. “I normally choose silence, but there are narratives that must be corrected.”
He claimed he was the one who suffered violence in the marriage.
“I am part of the unreported statistics of men who experience domestic violence from partners with uncontrolled anger issues. I restrained myself immensely despite all provocations and assaults.”
Mugume said he has “evidence of myself bleeding after being assaulted” and that friends and family were aware.
On claims of neglecting his children, he insisted he has been consistent with financial support.
“Despite having only seen my children ONCE in the last ten months, I have never stopped sending money monthly… There is evidence of this.”
He added that he obtained custody through court, but it was never enforced.
“I have gone to court, fought, and been granted custody of my children… Custody was granted on grounds of desertion.”
According to Mugume, he has been blocked from seeing the children since January despite multiple attempts.
He ended with a message to men: “Speak up against violence from your wives when you still have the chance… This is the last time I am addressing this issue, please give me space to heal.”
The couple married in 2021. Their lavish wedding, estimated at Shs 1 billion, made headlines and attracted high-profile guests.
