President Museveni has urged Ugandans to vote for leaders who can effectively follow up and safeguard the implementation of government programmes, warning that weak oversight is undermining service delivery across the country.
Speaking on Sunday at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, Museveni engaged several groups, including former National Unity Platform (NUP) members, Muslim supporters, students from higher institutions under the Sauti ya Vijana platform, and members of the Unstoppable group, all of whom pledged their support.
He told them that success of key initiatives such as free education, availability of medicines in public hospitals and wealth-creation programmes depends largely on the quality of leaders elected by the people.
“We must elect leaders who can properly follow up government programmes, including the availability of medicines in hospitals and the implementation of free education,” he said.
Museveni emphasised the need for leaders who will enforce free education policies in government schools and ensure that parents are not subjected to illegal charges.
“I urge you to work with us to enforce free education in government schools so that no child is charged illegally,” he said.
President condemned corruption, particularly reports of jobs being sold at district level and theft of medicines from public health facilities.
“Corruption in all its forms must stop. The selling of jobs at district level and the theft of drugs are unacceptable and must be dealt with decisively,” Museveni said.
He reiterated his long-standing message on wealth creation, calling on every household to embrace income-generating activities through the Parish Development Model (PDM) and other government programmes.
“I want every household to join the money economy through PDM and other government programmes. Uganda is doing well. Our economy is growing steadily, and we now have a surplus in most products,” Museveni said.
