Power restoration efforts in Mbale and neighboring districts have been delayed after heavy flooding submerged the Mbale Substation, Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has announced.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning following intense rainfall in the region, affected electricity supply in Mbale City, Nakaloke, Budadiri, Bududa, Manafwa, Buwalasi, Sironko Town Council, Buyombo and surrounding areas.
In a statement, UEDCL said the flooding left critical substation equipment soaked, making it unsafe to immediately restore electricity.
“Most of the equipment was heavily soaked in water, making it unsafe to restore power supply in time,” said Jonan Kiiza, UEDCL’s Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs.
Engineers worked through the night to drain the facility and dry out affected components, Kiiza said, noting that restoration efforts are progressing but must be carried out cautiously to avoid safety risks.
“Our technical team successfully drained the substation and worked throughout the night to ensure that all equipment is dry and safe for energization at the earliest time possible,” he said.
Kiiza thanked residents for their patience, assuring them that power would be restored as soon as it is safe to do so.
“We thank you for the patience you have demonstrated as we work towards full restoration of power supply,” he said.
