Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari had been confirmed dead in London.
His death was confirmed by his family on Sunday.
The news was first made public by Buhari’s former aide, Bashir Ahmad, who posted the announcement on X (formerly Twitter). According to Ahmad, the former president died in a London clinic.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Ahmad posted.
Buhari’s journey in leadership spanned over four decades. He first took charge of the country as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985 following a coup.
Decades later, he returned to power as a civilian, winning Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election and serving two terms until 2023.
His death comes after years of speculation about his health, especially during and after his time in office when he frequently traveled abroad for medical treatment.
The family is expected to release details of burial arrangements in accordance with Islamic traditions.
