Local footbal governing body, FUFA has rescinded its decision to implement the controversial new Uganda Premier League format following intense backlash from clubs, fans, and other stakeholders.
FUFA President Moses Magogo announced that the new format has been suspended with immediate effect.
He confirmed that the 2025/2026 Uganda Premier League season will revert to the traditional and widely accepted home-and-away fixture system.
Magogo noted that the federation will use the next one year to educate stakeholders about the proposed new format, which has been widely rejected.
The now-abandoned format had sparked division within the football community, with clubs and fans accusing FUFA of imposing changes without adequate consultation.
Vipers SC openly rejected participation under the new system, while SC Villa agreed to play but “under protest.”
The discontent spilled over to the terraces, with fans launching an online and stadium boycott campaign under the hashtag #BoycottTheUPL leading to visibly empty stands throughout the season.
Fans also used the #SayNoToTheNewLeagueFormat hashtag to preach against the new league format that they said was disastrous to Ugandan football.
Many argued that the new format would encourage match fixing.
Uganda Premier League board chairman, Arinaitwe Rugyendo on Friday told NBS Sport that three possible sponsors had pulled out following the introduction of the new league format.
