Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has expressed concern over the resurgence of machete attacks and the violent arrests of opposition supporters, calling for professionalism and restraint among security agencies as the country moves deeper into the election season.
Speaking on Tuesday in Mengo while receiving Amakula (gifts to the Kabaka) from his subjects in Mpigi, Katikkiro condemned the excessive force and humiliation reportedly used by some security personnel.
“I saw the way officers arrested NUP supporters undressing a woman as if she is a terrorist,” he said.
“Don’t you think such acts are nasty to kids? I saw how men were arrested as if they were arresting terrorists.”
He called upon law enforcement agencies to carry out arrests within the bounds of the law and with respect for human dignity.
“Security operatives should lawfully arrest people, not in a bad way,” he emphasized.
The Katikkiro also appealed to the youth to remain calm and uphold peace throughout the election period, urging them to reject provocation and violence.
“I urge the youth to maintain peace especially during this period of elections,” he said.
Katikkiro also questioned why incidents of machete-wielding assailants commonly known as the Bijambiya group tend to resurface only during election periods.
“I wonder why machete wielders appear only during elections,” Mayiga said. “Should we think that these assassins spend five years preparing their machetes to kill people?”
He urged security agencies to urgently investigate and neutralize such groups to ensure peace and stability in affected regions.
“I call upon security to handle that issue to ensure peace in areas affected by this group of machete wielders commonly known as the Bijambiya group,” he added.
