The Ministry of Works and Transport has confirmed the recovery of 50 stolen road guardrail components and the arrest of three suspects linked to vandalism along the Gulu–Kitgum Highway.
According to the ministry, the suspects allegedly removed and stole road infrastructure between Abera Bridge in Unyama Sub-county and Aswa River Bridge in Paicho Sub-county during incidents that occurred between May 27 and May 29, 2026.
Preliminary findings from Police indicate that the suspects used an adjustable spanner to unfasten guardrail connections before taking away the metallic components.
Authorities said the recovered guardrails are part of critical road safety infrastructure designed to protect motorists and reduce the severity of crashes, especially near bridges and high-risk sections of the highway.
The three suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue to establish the full extent of the damage and determine the value of the stolen infrastructure.
The Ministry condemned the vandalism, warning that destruction and theft of public infrastructure not only disrupt transport services but also put road users at risk.
Officials further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report acts of vandalism to security agencies to safeguard public investments.
