Makerere University has banned all physical campaign concerts and gatherings linked to the ongoing Guild presidential race, directing that all campaign activities be conducted online.
Guild presidential candidates Gracious Kadondi, affiliated with the National Unity Platform (NUP), and Hannah Karema Tumukunde had planned a street jam in Kikoni along Nalika Hostels lane on Wednesday, April 7, featuring several artists performing for their supporters.
However, Makerere University, through the Dean of Students, blocked the event from taking place, citing security risks.
In a statement issued by the Dean of Students, Dr. Winifred Kabumbuli, the university warned candidates and their supporters against organizing events outside campus, particularly in areas such as Kikoni.
“It has come to the attention of this Office that some Guild Presidential candidates and their supporters have organized campaign concerts and gatherings outside of University such as in Kikoni,” Dr. Kabumbuli said.
She emphasized that under the Makerere University Students’ Guild Statute, 2022, all student elections are required to be conducted virtually unless the University Council decides otherwise.
“In this regard, all campaign activities are expected to be conducted online. Physical rallies, processions, concerts, or any form of gathering intended to mobilize support in or outside the University are not permitted,” she added.
The Dean of Students further revealed that the university had received credible intelligence indicating that such gatherings could turn violent, posing a threat to both students and the surrounding community.
“The office has also received credible reports that physical mobilization activities in Kikoni may escalate into violence and pose a risk to the safety of students and the community,” she noted.
Students have now been urged to strictly follow electoral guidelines and cooperate with university security and the Electoral Commission.
Kabumbuli warned that any student found violating the regulations will face disciplinary action, adding that security teams have been deployed to enforce compliance.
Makerere University called on students to prioritize safety and uphold the integrity of the electoral process as campaigns continue.
