The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) recruitment drive in Apac District turned somber on Friday when a 22-year-old aspiring soldier collapsed and died moments after completing the mandatory fitness run.
The deceased, identified as Dono Solomon, had just finished the short-distance run — a key stage in the recruitment process — when he suddenly fell.
According to Apac Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Andrew Onyuk, medical personnel on standby rushed to assist him immediately.
“He was rushed in an ambulance, which was following the runners, to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, upon arrival, he could not make it. This has been very unfortunate,” Mr Onyuk said, adding that a post-mortem is underway to establish the cause of death.
Mr Onyuk extended his condolences to Solomon’s family and commended the recruitment team for acting quickly. He also revealed that another applicant collapsed during the run but was stabilised after receiving urgent medical care.
Col David Opeero, who heads the UPDF recruitment team, explained that the selection process involves four stages — verification of shortlisted candidates, document checks, preliminary medical screening, and the run followed by a full medical examination.
“In Apac, during the run, one of the participants collapsed. Despite prompt evacuation and first aid, he unfortunately passed away. The body is now at Apac Government Hospital. We have extended heartfelt condolences,” Col Opeero said.
The recruitment proceeded after the incident, yielding successful candidates in both Apac and Kwania districts.
In Apac District, of the 91 shortlisted, 56 qualified including 44 male regular recruits, 10 female regular recruits, and two male professionals.
In Kwania District, of the 75 shortlisted, 38 passed, 33 male regular recruits, three female regular recruits, and two professionals.
The UPDF has pledged to continue providing medical and logistical support throughout the nationwide exercise to ensure the safety and well-being of all applicants.
