Police in Mukono District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of Kitata Henry, a parish councillor who collapsed while attending a swearing-in ceremony at Nakisunga Sub-county Headquarters.
Kitata, approximately 30 years old and a resident of Namakwa Village in Katente Parish, served as the Directly Elected Councillor for Katente Parish and was also vying for the position of Speaker of Nakisunga Sub-county.
According to police, the councillor had been battling an illness for several days but was reportedly recovering before the tragic incident.
According to preliminary reports, the deceased had been unwell for the past three days and had been undergoing treatment.
“His condition had reportedly improved,” Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala said in a statement.
Kawala said that on May 29, 2026, Kitata left his home to attend the swearing-in ceremony at the sub-county headquarters. However, while at the event, his health suddenly worsened, prompting an emergency response.
“While at the event, his condition suddenly deteriorated, prompting those present to rush him to Herona Medical Centre for emergency medical attention. Unfortunately, upon arrival at the facility, he was pronounced dead,” Kawala stated.
The death has shocked residents and local leaders in Nakisunga Sub-county, where Kitata was known for his involvement in community affairs and local governance.
To establish the exact cause of death, police have transferred the body to Mulago National Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
“The body has been conveyed to Mulago National Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death,” Kawala added.
Police said inquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
“Investigations into the matter are ongoing,” the police spokesperson said.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm as investigators await the results of the post-mortem examination.
