Beatrice Mao, wife of Democratic Party (DP) president and Justice Minister Norbert Mao, has been officially nominated to contest for Lord Mayor of Kampala City, marking a high-profile entry into the 2026 local elections.
Her nomination follows the DP’s decision to rally behind her, after party member John Bosco Kamoga stepped aside to consolidate support.
This positions Mrs. Mao as the party’s strong contender in what is shaping up to be a fiercely competitive race.
She will face a challenging contest against incumbent Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, who is seeking a fourth term under the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), and Eng. Ronald Balimwezo, former Nakawa East MP, running on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
Lukwago, who has led the city since 2011, received formal endorsement from his party earlier this week, as he positions himself for another term at Kampala City Hall.
The Electoral Commission continues to register candidates for various Local Government positions, setting the stage for a high-stakes mayoral race that could reshape the city’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 General Election.
