The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Motorised Infantry Division, together with the Uganda Air Force College, took part in a blood donation exercise held at Nakasongola Cantonment as part of the Nakasongola Community Blood Crisis initiative.
The exercise brought together senior officers, junior officers, and other personnel in a collective effort to support the national blood bank and save lives.
Major General Charles Byanyima, Commander of the Motorised Infantry Division, praised the officers and soldiers for participating in the exercise. He encouraged continued voluntary blood donation, saying it helps not only service members and their families but also accident victims and patients suffering from various illnesses.
Colonel Ali James Uma, Commandant of the Uganda Air Force College in Nakasongola, noted that the donated blood would go a long way in supporting patients with critical conditions, especially mothers who experience complications during childbirth.
At Nakasongola Military Hospital, Lt. Dr. Simpson Ssemwogerere said the blood collected would help address shortages, particularly during the festive season when demand is usually high.
Senior Nursing Officer Asha Shamirah Agip thanked the cantonment leadership for mobilising personnel, noting that about 250 donors participated on the first day alone. She also commended commanders for leading by example by taking part in the donation exercise themselves.
She added that proper storage facilities have been put in place at the military hospital to preserve blood supplies and warned against any illegal charges for blood, stressing that it is provided free of charge.
The exercise saw wide participation from various departments within the division, all united by a common goal of saving lives through voluntary blood donation.
