Police have impounded a taxi suspected to be involved in a series of highway robberies following a coordinated operation that led to its interception in Masaka.
According to police, the vehicle, registration number UBL 572K, was tracked and escorted to Nateete Police Station to support ongoing investigations.
In a statement, police said the taxi is linked to alleged highway robberies and was intercepted after intelligence-led operations.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspects used deception to target a female victim along the Northern Bypass near Namungona Roundabout. The taxi reportedly intercepted the woman and forced her to open the vehicle door after falsely telling her that she had knocked someone dead.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the taxi intercepted a female victim, coerced her into opening the door, and falsely informed her that she had knocked someone dead at Namungona Roundabout along the Northern Bypass — a deceptive tactic believed to be used to steal victims’ vehicles,” police said.
Following the incident, police launched a search operation that resulted in the successful interception and impoundment of the suspect vehicle in Masaka.
“Following this incident, police launched a coordinated search operation for the vehicle, which culminated in its successful interception and impoundment in Masaka,” the statement added.
Investigators are now documenting the victim’s account as part of efforts to build a case against the suspects.
“Efforts are currently underway to record the victim’s statement and place it on file to support ongoing investigations,” police said.
Police assured the public that further details will be communicated as investigations continue.
