As Uganda gears up to host the prestigious African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025 from August 2nd to 29th, the Uganda Police has issued a detailed traffic advisory warning of heavy congestion across Kampala, Entebbe, and other key areas during the tournament.
The championship, organized under the Confederation of African Football (CAF), will bring together national teams, CAF and FIFA officials, and thousands of fans from across the continent, sparking an influx of movement around major routes, hotels, and stadiums.
Speaking to the press on Monday, Public Relations Officer Directorate of Traffic a d Road Safety, SP Michael Kananura confirmed that traffic volumes are expected to increase significantly throughout the tournament period.
“We are anticipating heavier-than-usual traffic flow especially along the Entebbe Expressway, Northern Bypass, and access roads to Namboole, Kyambogo, Wankulukuku, and other training grounds,” said Kananura. “We urge the public to plan their journeys early and follow traffic guidelines to avoid unnecessary delays.”
According to the advisory, match fixtures and team training sessions will affect multiple roads leading to the following venues:
Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) – main match venue
Annex Grounds (Namboole), Wankulukuku Stadium, Kyambogo University, FUFA Grounds Mengo, and KISU Grounds Bukoto – designated training grounds
Hotels hosting teams and officials including Serena, Mestil, Speke Resort, Skyz, and FUFA Hotel Kisaasi will also experience heightened activity, with the expressway and city bypasses identified as primary transport corridors.
To manage this, the Uganda Police will deploy heavily along official routes, provide escort convoys for team movements, and enforce traffic diversions in high-pressure areas. Specific diversions include:
Naalya – trucks to be diverted to Kyaliwajjala–Ssonde
Seeta – trucks redirected to Namugongo
Kinawataka – no truck access to Kireka
Kireka–Jokas Road – limited to pedestrian use only
Bweyogerere – traffic rerouted to Kinawataka Road via Jokas Hotel
Access to VIP and general parking at Mandela Stadium will be strictly regulated, with accreditation required for all vehicles.
Kananura emphasized that strict compliance will be expected throughout the championship.
“We’ll be working with CAF, FUFA, and city authorities to ensure security and mobility. Anyone found flouting traffic rules or obstructing convoys will be dealt with accordingly,” he warned.
The police further advised all road users to remain patient, obey officers on duty, and allow extra time when moving around Kampala during the championship.
“This is a proud moment for Uganda to host Africa. Let us all play our part to ensure safety, order, and a smooth experience for our visitors,” Kananura added.
