Security forces have withdrawn from the home of National Unity Platform president, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine in Magere, Wakiso district.
Security including both police and the army had laid siege at the two-time presidential candidate’s home since the January, 15 general elections, restricting entrance and exit.
However, on Tuesday, security vacated from the premises and this came a few weeks after Kyagulanyi announced that he had temporarily left Uganda for the United States to engage international partners.
The development comes on the backdrop of security spokespersons saying they were keeping presence at the home for security reasons.
The siege
The situation at the Magere home escalated on January 24, when security forces raided the residence in a night operation.
During the incident, Kyagulanyi’s wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, was allegedly assaulted and later admitted to Nsambya Hospital. However, the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, confirmed the raid but denied claims of assault.
“My soldiers did not beat up Barbie… Kabobi’s wife. First of all, we do not beat up women. They are not worth our time. We are looking for her cowardly husband, not her,” Muhoozi wrote.
Tensions persisted into February. On February 3, Kyagulanyi reported another raid, saying security forces had taken full control of his residence.
“The military surrounding our home in Magere once again forced themselves into the house. They’re now fully occupying our entire home – inside, outside, and around it,” Bobi Wine said.
Later, on February 18, while addressing the 2026 Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy via video from a hideout, Kyagulanyi stated that his family had fled the country due to safety concerns.
“They took over my home and surrounded it, and they are occupying my home as we speak right now. My wife and children had to flee the country for fear of their lives,” he said.
On March 14, Kyagulanyi confirmed he had also left Uganda, describing his departure as temporary and aimed at engaging international stakeholders.
Security has not commented on the reasons behind the withdrawal.
