Seven officers from the Uganda Police Force were among the 50 individuals honoured for exceptional service during the 36th Heroes Day celebrations held at Lyantonde Technical Grounds in Kabula County, Lyantonde District.
The event, held under the theme “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration,” paid tribute to both fallen and living Ugandans whose selfless acts have contributed to the country’s peace, security, and development.
President Museveni presided over the national celebration and led a wreath-laying ceremony at a monument in Kaliro Town Council in memory of National Resistance Army (NRA) fighters who died during the 1981–1986 liberation struggle.
Among the decorated police officers was Commissioner of Police (CP) Ecega Richard, Commander of the Kampala Metropolitan Police, who received the Diamond Jubilee Medal for his outstanding leadership and dedication to maintaining law and order in the capital.
Two senior officers, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kavuma Henry and Sergeant Turyakira Rose Margaret, were awarded the Long Service Gold Medal in recognition of their years of loyal and distinguished service to the force.
A moment of solemn remembrance was dedicated to Sergeant Mwende Godfrey (RIP) and Corporal Obala Bilal (RIP), who were posthumously awarded the Personal Sacrifice Medal for their bravery and for paying the ultimate price in the line of duty.
Demonstrating acts of exceptional courage, Corporal Mukisa Charles and Police Constable Ongier Chan Walter received the Gallantry Star Medal, awarded to officers whose bravery in action has set them apart.
In addition to the police recognitions, four Uganda Prisons Service officers were also honoured with the National Independence Diamond Jubilee Medal, acknowledging their commitment and contributions to Uganda’s progress.
The annual Heroes Day celebration served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by Ugandans in pursuit of justice, peace, and national transformation.
