Spiro has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ricky Papa Thompson, the co-founder and director for ride-hailing company, SafeBoda to popularize electric motorbikes in Uganda.
The MoU was signed on Wednesday at the Spiro headquarters in Kampala.
“This partnership is a powerful step forward in our mission to transform urban transport in Africa. By joining forces with Ricky, we are bridging authentic community connections with innovative technology to accelerate clean, affordable, and locally built electric mobility solutions across Uganda,” said Kaushik Burman, CEO – Spiro.
As part of the deal, the SafeBoda co-founder will drive awareness and adoption of Spiro’s electric motorbike ecosystem among boda boda riders and delivery users nationwide using his combination of community leadership and digital influence to support Spiro with on-ground activations and social media amplification.
“We are proud to partner with Ricky, whose influence and dedication align perfectly with Spiro’s vision. Together, we aim to make sustainable mobility accessible and practical for Uganda’s boda boda sector, empowering riders and communities alike,” said Gaurav Anand, the Country Head – Spiro Uganda.
Commenting about the partnership, Papa Ricky welcomed the opportunity to make electric motorbikes popular in the country.
“This partnership is an opportunity for me to use my voice to amplify the good work by Spiro for betterment of the industry. It is our responsibility to protect the environment and Spiro provides this with their electric motorbikes. I am sure there is going to be something better for riders.”
Spiro is a leading provider of electric mobility solutions in Africa, with a mission to transform the continent’s urban transportation landscape through sustainable, clean-energy alternatives. In Uganda,
Spiro has positioned itself as a key player in helping Uganda transition away from fuel-based boda bodas, offering more affordable and environmentally friendly alternatives.
Spiro is rolling out a robust ecosystem for electric motorbikes (e-bikes), which includes locally built and serviced electric bikes, battery-swapping stations, and digital platforms to support riders and logistics companies.
Spiro’s model integrates both hardware (electric bikes) and infrastructure (charging and swapping stations) to ensure riders can operate efficiently.
With growing concerns about air pollution, fuel costs, and climate change, Spiro’s expansion in Uganda aligns with national and global goals for green transport.
Collaborations like the one with Papa Ricky mark a strategic step in driving public awareness and behavioral change in the boda boda sector, which is central to Uganda’s urban mobility.
