Musician-turned-politician Mathias Walukagga, the National Unity Platform (NUP) aspirant for Busiro East, has dismissed the Electoral Commission’s decision to disqualify him over alleged expired academic documents, insisting the move was politically motivated rather than grounded in law.
Walukagga said he was not surprised by the Commission’s ruling.
“What the Electoral Commission did is exactly what I expected them to do. I would be surprised if the Electoral Commission did not do that because from the start, we knew—even the lawyers of the complainant had already told us—that it was going to be a political decision, not a legal one. So I already knew what the decision would be; I was only waiting for the outcome,” he said.
He confirmed that his legal team has filed an appeal with the High Court and expressed confidence that justice will prevail.
“We believe we shall get justice from there. We are now just waiting for the date of hearing from court,” he said.
Walukagga also dismissed reports claiming his disqualification had affected his health.
“I’m not admitted anywhere,” he clarified.
He further refuted claims by a fellow independent contestant that he had withdrawn support for NUP and was now backing them, stressing that he remains the party’s official flag bearer.
Walukagga emphasized that his focus is now on the High Court ruling, which he hopes will restore his name on the ballot.
