Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Commissioner General John Musinguzi Rujoki has commended a female customs officer who reportedly rejected a Shs300 million bribe and uncovered Shs37 billion in undeclared cash concealed in a shipment.
The officer, Enid Priscilla Katusiime, turned down the bribe offered by the owner of a shipment in which cash amounting to Shs37 billion—stacked in 100-dollar notes—had been concealed.
Speaking on Thursday while awarding Katusiime, Musinguzi praised her integrity and professionalism.
“Your firm resolve to uphold integrity despite pressure not to declare the money reflects a high standard of accountability that the institution embodies,” he said.
He also lauded her courage, noting that her actions set an example for URA staff and reinforce the authority’s mission of mobilising revenue for national development in a transparent and efficient manner.
“She demonstrated the highest level of integrity and commitment to duty. This is the kind of conduct we expect from all our officers,” he added.
Katusiime said the cash was discovered inside a shipment that arrived in a container from Turkey, concealed in four boxes.
“I opened one box and found kitchenware, but upon opening the next one, I saw bundles of paper money. The moment I discovered the money, the clearing agent started convincing me not to escalate the matter, saying it was my chance to get rich,” she said.
