US President Donald Trump has appointed senior American official Nick Checker as his special envoy to attend the swearing-in ceremony of President Yoweri Museveni at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
President Museveni revealed on Monday that he had held discussions with Checker at State House Entebbe ahead of the inauguration ceremony scheduled for Tuesday.
In a statement shared on X, Museveni said the meeting focused on Africa’s economic transformation and the importance of industrialisation across the continent.
“I emphasized the need for value addition and industrialisation across Africa. We cannot continue exporting raw materials such as coffee, oil and minerals without processing them. Value addition is crucial for expanding Africa’s GDP, creating jobs and increasing the purchasing power of our people,” Museveni stated.
Nick Checker currently serves as the Senior Bureau Official in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs. He previously held the position of Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southern Africa and Foreign Assistance.
Before joining the State Department, Checker served as Deputy Executive Secretary for the National Security Council under President Trump. Between 2014 and 2025, he worked with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), focusing on conflicts in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa, as well as congressional affairs.
For his work on Afghanistan, he received the Intelligence Commendation Medal in 2021 and the Director’s Award for Analysis in 2022. In 2023, he also served as a national security fellow in the office of Senator Bill Hagerty.
Checker holds a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s degree in Security Studies from Georgetown University.
