The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has rolled out a bold national campaign urging electricity users with illegal, tampered, or bypassed meters to voluntarily regularise their connections ahead of a strict enforcement deadline set for September 30, 2025.
Dubbed “Weterezeeee”, the campaign officially began on Tuesday, July 23, offering a free registration and amnesty window open daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm at all UEDCL service points.
Offenders who come forward during this period will not face any penalties or legal action, the utility company announced.
“This is a chance for all those on illegal supply to normalize their connections. After September 30, enforcement will resume, and offenders will face the full force of the law,” said Jonan Kiiza, UEDCL’s Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs.
The campaign marks a critical step in UEDCL’s ongoing efforts to curb rampant power theft, which continues to drain the country’s energy sector of billions in lost revenue each year.
Power theft not only undermines national development but also endangers lives due to unsafe connections and places a financial burden on paying customers.
UEDCL says this drive is not just about protecting revenue it’s about restoring fairness, improving safety, and ensuring a more reliable power distribution system.
UEDCL took over the electricity distribution role over 100 days ago following the exit of Umeme Limited fSince then, the company has been steadily expanding its operational footprint in rural and underserved areas, reclaiming lost supply, and improving service reliability.
Once the amnesty period closes on September 30, the company will resume full enforcement under the Electricity Act, which provides for disconnection, hefty fines, and even criminal prosecution for those found guilty of illegal electricity usage.
Electricity consumers are encouraged to visit their nearest UEDCL office or contact official channels for more information on how to regularise their connections during the amnesty period.
