In a bid to enhance road safety and financial security for millions of Ugandans, Sanlam Allianz has introduced a new insurance product dubbed “On the Go Accident Cover”, designed to offer quick, affordable, and easily accessible protection for travelers across the country.
The new cover, which starts from shs 1,300, provides financial protection in the event of accidents resulting in injury, disability, or death within 24 months of the incident.
Speaking during the launch, Ruth Namuli, the Chief Executive Officer of Sanlam Allianz, said the innovation reflects the company’s commitment to creating practical, people-centered insurance solutions.
“We start with the values that we have in terms of innovation. It is critical for us to give back to the community with products that are relevant to daily life,” she said.
“Each day, millions of Ugandans travel by road — most without any accident cover. The ‘On the Go’ solution is simple, affordable, and can be accessed through your smartphone whenever you travel by taxi, bus, or boda boda.”
Namuli explained that the product addresses a significant gap in Uganda’s insurance market, where many road users remain financially vulnerable after accidents.
“According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report for 2024, there were 25,000 reported road crashes, over 5,000 deaths, and more than 17,000 injuries. Yet most victims lacked any insurance cover,” she noted.
“With as little as shs 1,300 — less than the price of a Rolex — one can now get coverage worth up to shs 3.3 million for medical expenses, permanent disability, or funeral costs.”
She added that the product marks a new era of digital convenience in accessing insurance.
“All you need is your smartphone to get covered, even for your loved ones. Insurance must be practical, affordable, and accessible. Travel is frequent, risk is constant — our solution meets those conditions.”
Representing civil society, Sam Stewart Mutabaazi, the Executive Director of the Civil Society Coalition on Transport (C-SPOT), praised Sanlam Allianz for a timely response to Uganda’s road safety crisis.
“We bring together different actors within the transport industry to ensure safe travel. With over 25,000 accidents and nearly 6,000 deaths last year, this innovation offers real relief to Ugandans,” he said.
“Sanlam is Africa’s largest insurer, and Allianz is the largest globally. Their partnership brings powerful solutions to Uganda’s challenges.”
Mutabaazi encouraged the public and media to raise awareness about the importance of insurance.
“Insurance helps people sleep better knowing they are protected. The ‘On the Go’ cover is one of the many ways we can travel confidently and stay safe.”
Representing the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Stephen Kadu Mukasa commended Sanlam Allianz for designing a product aligned with consumer needs and regulatory standards.
“This launch demonstrates the company’s dedication to providing financial security and promoting inclusiveness. The product is practical and addresses accident and medical risks that affect families and livelihoods,” Mukasa said.
“You can have confidence in this product — it has passed all regulatory approvals and offers real value.”
He urged the insurance industry to continue innovating with purpose.
“Innovation should add value to people’s lives. We commend Sanlam Allianz for this bold step and pledge continued support for innovations that enhance consumer confidence and drive industry growth.”
The On the Go Accident Cover provides compensation of up to shs 1 million for accidental death, shs 1 million for permanent disability, shs 500,000 for funeral expenses, and shs 650,000 for accidental medical expenses — bringing the total maximum benefit to shs 3.15 million.
