The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Lady Justice Aisha Nalule Bitala, has confirmed receiving a petition filed by a group of activists against Speaker Anita Among regarding her wealth.
“I want to confirm that we received the complaint, and we have a procedure we follow while processing such complaints,” Nalule told journalists at the Uganda Media Centre.
She was responding to questions from journalists about the matter.
A group of lawyers and activists recently petitioned the IGG, seeking a comprehensive investigation into Among’s wealth over an alleged breach of the Leadership Code Act.
The group accuses Among of allegedly failing to declare, or under-declaring, her wealth, assets, and liabilities as required under Ugandan law.
The development comes amid public debate surrounding Among’s Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a high-end luxury SUV reportedly worth Shs3.4 billion, which has sparked widespread discussion among members of the public.
Speaking on Friday, the IGG said her office would follow the proper procedures in processing the petition.
“We have a procedure under which we receive complaints. We are processing it, and we shall work on it, but I want to confirm that I received the complaint yesterday,” she said.
The Leadership Code Act provides for minimum standard of behaviour and conduct for leaders and public officers and section four of the act requires leaders to declare their income, assets and liabilities to the IGG, three months after assuming office and thereafter, every two years in the month of March.
Section 5(i) of the Leadership Code Act also requires all public officers to declare their income, assets and liabilities to the IGG, three months after assuming office and then after every five officers.
