The Contingent Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU XI), Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, has praised his troops for their professionalism and unwavering dedication as they enter the third quarter of their deployment under the United Nations mandate.

Speaking to officers and personnel during a camp address, Lt Col Barigye commended the unit’s discipline and operational commitment but cautioned against complacency. He emphasized that despite the current outward calm, the security situation remains fluid and unpredictable.

“Al-Shabaab is planning, and we must stay vigilant,” he warned. “My responsibility is to bring you all back home alive—and your duty is to ensure your safety at all times.”

The commander underscored the importance of heightened security awareness and sustained operational readiness, urging troops not to relax in the face of perceived calm. “We must achieve our mission as UNGU XI in line with our mandate,” he added.

In addition to their military duties, the troops also received financial literacy training aimed at promoting long-term financial stability and personal development.

The session was conducted by Major CB Rutaremwa, branch manager of AUSSOM Wazalendo SACCO, and focused on key principles of financial planning and investment.

Lt Col Barigye encouraged soldiers to take financial education seriously, describing it as vital to their post-deployment wellbeing. “Financial management and investment knowledge are crucial for your future,” he noted.

Supporting this message, Major Jacob Gowan Kaburika, the Administration Officer, highlighted the importance of financial prudence.

“We earn daily and monthly, but spend daily. It’s prudent we learn how to invest wisely and manage our projects effectively to prosper,” he said.

Major Rutaremwa’s training covered saving discipline, the factors that influence saving habits, and the long-term benefits of cultivating a savings culture.

He pointed out that consistent saving contributes to financial independence, improved retirement planning, and sustainable wealth creation.

As UNGU XI advances in its mission timeline, the dual focus on operational excellence and financial empowerment reflects a holistic approach to the welfare and effectiveness of the UPDF troops serving under the UN flag.
