Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops serving under the United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU-XI) in Somalia have been urged to remain vigilant as they enter the second half of their peacekeeping mission.
The call was made by UNGU-XI Commander, Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, during a meeting with officers and men at the unit’s headquarters.
“We have made significant progress so far, but we cannot afford to relax,” he said. “Our enemy of peace, Al-Shabaab, is constantly observing our activities and waiting for an opportunity to strike. We must remain alert and proactive to prevent any surprises.”
Lt Col Barigye further reminded commanders of their responsibility to uphold discipline and set the standard for their troops.
“As leaders, it is our duty to ensure soldiers understand the importance of their role in peacekeeping and the risks involved. We must lead by example and maintain the highest standards,” he stressed.
Military Intelligence Officer Capt Joseph Maada underscored the importance of timely intelligence gathering in anticipating and countering enemy threats.
The meeting, which brought together company commanders, departmental heads, and shift leaders, focused on reinforcing operational readiness, discipline, and vigilance as the Ugandan contingent continues its mission under the United Nations.
