Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has warned the public about highlighting a fake notice circulating on social media claiming that the Commission plans to shut down internet services, mobile money platforms, and bank transactions during and after the upcoming elections.
In a public advisory, UCC clarified that the notice did not originate from the Commission and urged the public to disregard it entirely.
“The Uganda Communications Commission alerts the public that a circulating notice is fake and was not issued by the Commission,” UCC said.
The regulator emphasized that it communicates official information only through its verified and authorised channels, cautioning the public against relying on unverified or misleading sources.
“UCC only distributes official updates via its verified channels,” the Commission stated.
The fake notice falsely alleged that internet access, mobile money services, and bank transactions would be suspended during the election period. UCC described these claims as false and misleading.
The Commission urged the public to seek accurate information directly from its official platforms and to avoid sharing unverified content.
“The public should ignore the fake notice and consult only official UCC channels for accurate updates,” UCC advised.
UCC warned that the spread of false information can cause unnecessary panic and undermine public confidence in essential communication and financial services, particularly during sensitive national processes such as elections.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to keeping the public informed through legitimate channels and encouraged citizens to verify any information related to communications services before sharing it further.
