Police in Kampala have arrested 21 suspects, including two women, in connection with a series of broad daylight robberies and assaults that took place on June 28, 2025, around the National Theatre and UBC roundabout.
The suspects, who were captured on video footage that has since gone viral on social media, were dressed in yellow T-shirts and appeared to pose as NRM supporters.
They moved in large, noisy groups, taking advantage of the crowd to rob anyone they encountered along the way.
Speaking on the incident, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrests.
“Police in Kampala have arrested 21 suspects, including two females, in connection with a string of robberies and assaults that occurred on June 28, 2025, around 2:00 pm, along the National Theatre and UBC roundabout area,” he stated.
The gang targeted motorists, businesspeople, and pedestrians, taking advantage of the large crowds and traffic buildup related to the presidential nomination event.
Victims were seen being harassed and robbed of their belongings in broad daylight as the suspects moved in groups.
Using CCTV footage, the police managed to track down and intercept the suspects at different locations.
They are currently detained at Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala and Wandegeya Police Station.
“Victims have recorded statements, and the case file is being prepared for court,” Onyango said, adding that the police are now investigating cases of simple robbery and assault.
Police have confirmed that one suspect was injured while trying to flee arrest and is currently receiving medical treatment under custody.
Authorities are continuing to review surveillance footage to identify more individuals involved in related incidents. Onyango urged the public to come forward with any additional information:
“We call upon anyone who was victimized during these incidents but has not yet reported to the police to do so immediately,” he said.
The incident has raised concerns over public safety during large political gatherings, with many citizens calling for enhanced security and crowd control at major events moving forward.
