Police in Katwe Division have arrested 29 suspects in a renewed crackdown on motorcycle theft and illegal trade in spare parts following a public outcry over rising cases in the area.
According to police, the intelligence-led operations were carried out on April 17, 2026, in Ndeeba and Muganzirwaza zones in Rubaga Division, Kampala, targeting suspected motorcycle thieves and shops dealing in stolen parts.
The raids led to the arrest of 29 male suspects and the recovery of 24 assorted motorcycle spare parts, as well as old number plates believed to have been removed from stolen motorcycles.
Some of the number plates recovered include UFY 763/A, UGG 874/E, UMA 304DR, UET 612/L, and UMA 267GT.
Police also cordoned off 10 shops in Muganzirwaza for further searches as investigations continue.
Speaking about the operation, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, said the exercise was triggered by public concern and is aimed at restoring safety for motorcycle owners.
“Following a public outcry on the increasing theft of motorcycles in Katwe and surrounding areas, police conducted intelligence-led operations in Ndeeba and Muganzirwaza. This led to the arrest of 29 suspects and the recovery of 24 motorcycle spare parts and several number plates,” Owoyesigyire said.
He added that the operation is ongoing, with more arrests expected as police pursue other suspects linked to the network.
Police thanked members of the public for sharing information that helped guide the operation, saying community cooperation remains key in fighting crime.
Authorities say efforts to dismantle motorcycle theft syndicates in Kampala will continue in order to curb rising cases and ensure safety of property owners.
