Government through the Ministry of Works and Transport has initiated a comprehensive inspection of all Y.Y Coach Company buses at the Namanve Motor Vehicle inspection facility in Namanve.
The inspection comes in the wake of two separate accidents—one along the Katosi–Kyetume–Nyenga/Njeru route and another on the Pakwach–Arua highway—that have sparked widespread concern over the safety of public transport in the country.
The State Minister for Works, Fred Byamukama said the government would not tolerate negligence on the roads, especially from licensed public transport operators.
“We have suspended all operations of Y.Y Coaches for 15 days to allow for a thorough compliance audit and investigation. No bus will return to the road unless it meets all the required safety standards,” said Byamukama.
The minister emphasized that the ongoing inspection will assess the mechanical condition of each bus, driver conduct, and the company’s overall adherence to transport safety regulations.
The inspection is also part of a broader crackdown on reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance, both of which have contributed to an alarming rise in road traffic accidents in recent months.
“This should serve as a warning to other transport operators. The safety of Ugandans is not negotiable,” Byamukama added.
The Ministry has pledged to release a full report upon conclusion of the 15-day suspension, after which a decision will be made on whether Y.Y Coaches will be allowed to resume operations.
