As Uganda commemorated Heroes’ Day with heartfelt tributes to those who fought in the country’s liberation struggle, President Museveni reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting the families of veterans.
Speaking during the 36th Heroes Day celebrations held in Lyantonde, Masaka, under the theme “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration,” President Museveni paid homage to the National Resistance Army (NRA) fighters, describing them as the cornerstone of Uganda’s peace and stability.
“On this Heroes’ Day, I want to salute the fighters who stood firm during the resistance. We shall continue prioritising the welfare of war veterans,” Museveni said.
To emphasize this commitment, the President announced that he had ordered a comprehensive review of the Ministry of Luweero Triangle’s budget.
The ministry is responsible for coordinating support to veterans and the communities most affected by the 1981–1986 liberation war.
“The goal is to ensure that one clear problem is solved at a time, without spreading resources too thin through multiple unrelated sectors,” he explained.
In a shift from previous housing support strategies, Museveni proposed a more sustainable and participatory approach.
He suggested that the government provide key construction materials such as iron sheets and cement, while beneficiary families contribute bricks and labour.
“We need to focus on practical support for the families of fallen and living war veterans. Instead of building entire houses for war-affected families, the government could supply materials like iron sheets and cement, while the families contribute bricks and labour,” he added.
The President’s remarks come at a time when calls for timely and direct support from war veterans and their families especially those in the Luweero Triangle are growing louder.
During the ceremony, President Museveni also laid a wreath at a monument in Kaliro Town Council, Lyantonde District, in honour of the freedom fighters who lost their lives during the protracted NRA war that brought the NRM government to power.
The event, attended by several high-profile dignitaries, concluded with the awarding of medals to living heroes in recognition of their service and sacrifice.
