The National Unity Platform (NUP) President, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, has officially opened the party’s new regional headquarters for Eastern Uganda in Iganga Town, Busoga Sub-region.
Bobi Wine was escorted by his wife Barbie Itungo, Deputy Party president Linda Zedrig, Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya, Party Spokespeson, Joel Ssenyonyi, deputy Spokes person Waiswa Mufumbiro, MPs, Betty Nambooze, Hillary Kiyaga among others.
Speaking at the ceremony, Bobi Wine revealed that the party had quietly purchased land and constructed the facility over the past year, deliberately keeping the development under wraps to avoid obstruction.
“We purchased this land over a year ago, and started constructing our headquarters. I am thankful that up until this morning, nobody except those who needed to know, got to know that it was us building in that place. No wonder, the police showed up asking why we chose to surprise them with a visit,” he said.
He added that the secrecy was intentional.
“Well, because if they had known, they would have done everything possible to frustrate us,” Kyagulanyi explained.
The NUP leader praised party officials and supporters for their commitment, saying the regional offices will serve as a hub for mobilization and coordination of party activities in the East.
“The Regional Headquarters will coordinate our revolutionary activities in the entire region and be the center for coordination of our various efforts. This is testament to our commitment towards building a Party that will live beyond us,” he declared.
One of the highlights of the event was Kyagulanyi’s remarks about former Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, who has recently fallen out with sections of her NRM party. Kyagulanyi hailed Kadaga, noting that the National Unity Platform would be open to working with her.
“You call her Mama Busoga, I call her my Auntie. For us in NUP, we have no problems with her, and we warmly welcome her,” he said.
Bobi Wine also thanked party leaders who worked “tirelessly” to make the milestone a reality, emphasizing that the new office is part of NUP’s long-term vision to strengthen its grassroots structures across the country.
