Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze has dismissed public concerns about his health following a viral photo that sparked debate over his noticeable weight loss.
The discussion was triggered last week after a photo of the minister wearing a yellow shirt at the National Leadership Institute Kyankwanzi circulated widely on social media, with many Ugandans expressing concern about his appearance.
Responding to the concerns, Tumwebaze said his new look is intentional and not linked to any illness.
“To health educators, epidemiologists, nutritionists and all health professionals, I am really worried—and you too should be. Why? The battle against non-communicable diseases is far from being won,” he said.
He warned against what he described as a dangerous misconception that equates being overweight with good health.
“The dominant but mistaken thinking that being heavy, overweight and obese means being healthy, while being slim means being unhealthy, is a serious cause for alarm. To the contrary, a lean body is a strong one,” he said.
Tumwebaze explained that his weight loss was a deliberate decision achieved through lifestyle changes.
“Weight loss can only be worrying if it is unintentional and unexplained. But if it is intentional—through dieting, reducing calories, and increasing physical activity—then it is something to celebrate,” he noted.
He reassured the public that he is in good health despite the concerns raised online.
“So, dear friends sending me messages of ‘quick recovery,’ please take heart—I am not sick. My new look is intentional. It is well with me, and I thank God for the gift of life,” he said.
The minister is currently attending activities at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi, where the viral photo that sparked the debate was taken.
