The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced a nationwide recruitment exercise aimed at enlisting 10,200 new soldiers into its ranks.
The exercise, which targets holders of the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), will give preference to candidates with science backgrounds.
The announcement was made on Friday by Col. Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, during a press briefing at the Media Centre.
Magezi said the UPDF is seeking disciplined, patriotic and medically fit Ugandans to fill positions across various categories, including general recruits, regular forces, ICT specialists, engineers, health professionals, teachers, legal practitioners, musicians and sportsmen.
“The UPDF is going to recruit 10,200 soldiers into the regular force,” Magezi said, adding that the exercise forms part of the force’s efforts to strengthen its manpower and operational capacity.
He emphasized that the recruitment process is completely free of charge and cautioned members of the public against dealing with brokers or individuals claiming to influence the process.
“Recruitment into the UPDF is completely free of charge, and no agents or intermediaries are involved in the process,” Magezi said.
The recruitment exercise will run from July 20 to August 1, 2026, across all districts of Uganda. Successful applicants shortlisted for the next stage will have their names published on the UPDF website.
Magezi warned that the force would take firm action against anyone attempting to use forged documents or engage in fraudulent practices.
“Anyone who presents forged documents or engages in fraudulent activities will be arrested and prosecuted under the law,” he warned.
Applicants who make it to the shortlist will be required to present handwritten applications, recommendation letters from designated local leaders and valid national identity cards during the recruitment process.
The UPDF spokesperson also encouraged women, particularly those with professional qualifications, to take advantage of the opportunity.
“Females with professional qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply,” Magezi said.
The UPDF has urged all eligible Ugandans interested in serving their country to participate in the exercise and to rely only on official communication channels for recruitment information. Further details are available on the UPDF website.
