Buganda Kingdom has announced that this year’s 33rd Kabaka Coronation anniversary prayers will be held at Watoto Church in Kampala on July 31, 2026, continuing the Kingdom’s recent tradition of observing the occasion through interfaith prayer services.
Since 2024, Buganda has shifted from the traditional public celebrations to rotational faith-based commemorations, where different religious groups take turns leading prayers in honour of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II’s coronation anniversary.
In the past two years, the celebrations have been held across major places of worship. In 2024, the Protestant faith led the prayers at Namirembe Cathedral, while in 2025 the Islamic faith hosted the event at Kibuli Mosque.
This year, the prayers will be conducted at Watoto Church, with final logistical arrangements to be made between the Kingdom’s organizing committee and the church leadership.
Speaking during the unveiling of the organizing committee on Friday, Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, said the coronation anniversary remains a key moment for reflection on the Kingdom’s journey and achievements.
“In 33 years, a lot has been achieved not only in culture and heritage, but also in areas such as health, education, and development. It is very important that we continue to celebrate this day in a meaningful way,” he said.
The Katikkiro also announced an eight-member organizing committee to oversee preparations for the celebrations.
The team is chaired by Joseph Balikuddembe Kawuki, with Robert Serwanga serving as vice chairperson. Other members include Noah Kiyimba, Owek. Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, Ahmed Magandaazi Matovu, Josephine Nantege, David Ntege, and Capt. Christopher Lutwama.
Joseph Kawuki, the committee chairperson, pledged to deliver a colorful and well-organized event, expressing gratitude to the Kabaka for entrusting him with the responsibility.
