The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has launched a Shs16 billion project aimed at strengthening electricity distribution and improving power reliability across the Rwenzori region.
Dubbed the Nkenda–Ishaka Reliability Improvement Project, the investment will upgrade critical electricity distribution infrastructure to reduce outages, improve the quality of power supply, and support economic growth in the districts of Kasese, Rubirizi and Bushenyi.
The project was officially launched by the Kasese Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Lt. Joe Walusimbi, who presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the refurbishment of the Nkenda–Ishaka distribution line.
According to UEDCL, the project will involve the refurbishment of the Nkenda–Kasese and Nkenda–Ishaka 33kV distribution feeders, which have experienced recurring outages since 2022, disrupting electricity supply to households, businesses and industries across the region.
The utility said the rehabilitation works are expected to significantly improve network reliability by reducing the frequency and duration of power outages while enhancing the overall quality of electricity supply.
Beyond improving service delivery, the upgraded network will strengthen the evacuation of electricity generated by hydropower plants in the Rwenzori region, enabling the national grid to meet growing energy demand while supporting industrialisation, business expansion and other economic activities in western Uganda.
UEDCL said the investment forms part of its broader strategy to modernise Uganda’s electricity distribution network, improve service reliability and ensure a stable electricity supply for both domestic and commercial consumers.
Once completed, the project is expected to deliver a more resilient electricity network capable of supporting the region’s growing population, expanding industrial base and future energy needs.
