National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine has urged public servants to protect their integrity, saying government positions are temporary and should not be used to oppress fellow citizens.
His remarks followed the resignation of Mariam Wangadya as chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, Kyagulanyi said Wangadya’s departure should serve as a lesson to officials who use public office to advance political interests at the expense of justice and citizens’ rights.
“Offices are temporary but reputations are permanent. Power expires. Titles disappear. Official protection ends. What remains is your name, your conscience, and the legacy of the choices you made while you had authority,” Kyagulanyi said.
He urged public officials to think carefully before taking actions that violate the rights of Ugandans.
“Before accepting the role of persecuting, silencing, or oppressing fellow Ugandans for political survival or personal gain, ask yourself one question: What will remain when the office and the power are gone?” he said.
Kyagulanyi further argued that the current government does not stand by those who help it maintain power.
“The Museveni regime does not protect its enablers forever. It simply replaces them,” he said.
He added that Wangadya’s reported resignation reflects a pattern in which officials are used to serve the regime before being abandoned when they are no longer politically useful.
