Parental Care Nursery and Primary School Bushenyi has been crowned the 2025 African Debate Champion after an impressive performance at the Pan African Debate Championship held in Kigali, Rwanda.
The continental tournament, hosted from November 21–24 at Sparks Academy International School, brought together top young debaters from across the continent.
In a high-stakes grand finale on Sunday, November 23, Parental Care Bushenyi outperformed Munro Primary School from South Africa to secure the coveted title.
School Director Trevor Yebazamukama attributed the victory to the institution’s long-standing commitment to nurturing debate and public-speaking skills among learners.
“We have intentionally built a culture of debate among our pupils. Competing at this level sharpens their skills and boosts their confidence. These disciplines will serve them well, even in future careers that rely on public speaking,” he said.
Headteacher Desmond Tayebwa praised the pupils and teachers for their hard work, noting that the championship reinforced the school’s ability to excel beyond national borders.
“We are proud champions. We plan to field ten pupils divided into three teams as we prepare for more competitions. This win proves we can compete at both national and international levels, and now we are aiming even higher,” he stated.
The 2025 championship attracted 98 schools from across Africa, with participants competing in debate, public speaking, and storytelling. Countries represented included South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, and Malawi, among others.
With this victory, Parental Care Bushenyi will now represent Africa at the World Debate Championship scheduled to take place in Canada next year. The school previously won the 2023 continental edition held in Nairobi, Kenya, cementing its reputation as one of Africa’s leading hubs for young debaters.
