The Electoral Commission (EC) has imported a fleet of brand-new vehicles to be allocated to presidential candidates in the 2026 general elections.
The vehicles, which include Toyota Land Cruisers and double-cabin pickups, have already begun arriving at the Commission’s offices in Kampala.
According to EC officials, the cars are meant for the security detail of each candidate once they are officially nominated.
“The Toyota pickups are designated for the security details of the candidates, not for the candidates themselves. The Land Cruisers, on the other hand, are allocated to Electoral Commission officials, not to the candidates,” Julius Mucunguzi the EC spokesperson said.
The EC has set September 23 and 24, 2025 as the official nomination dates for presidential aspirants. This marks a critical step in the electoral roadmap that will lead Uganda into the next general elections.

The nomination process is demanding, with aspirants required to fulfill several constitutional and legal requirements. These include being a Ugandan by birth, a registered voter, and holding a minimum formal education of Advanced Level.
Independent candidates must also collect at least 100 signatures from registered voters in two-thirds of all districts.
The nomination process kicked off on 11th August 2025, when aspirants began collecting forms from the EC head office.
Once nominations are concluded, the campaign period will run from October 4, 2025, to January 12, 2026.
The general elections — covering presidential, parliamentary, and local government council positions — are scheduled between January 12 and February 9, 2026.
The provision of official vehicles to candidates’ security teams has been a standard practice in previous elections, aimed at ensuring safety and equity during campaigns.
With the 2026 race shaping up as one of the most competitive in Uganda’s history, the arrival of the new fleet underscores the EC’s preparations to deliver a secure and orderly electoral process.
