Police in Mpigi on Sunday arrested a Gateway Bus Company driver after he was found operating a passenger coach while under the influence of alcohol.
The driver, identified as Ronard Ziringura, was intercepted and arrested at 1:56 am on November 30, 2025, before being detained at Mpigi Police Station.
According to the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, Ziringura was driving bus registration number UBM 706X when officers stopped him and conducted an alcohol test, which he failed.
Speaking on the arrest, SP Michael Kananura, the traffic police spokesperson said the operation was part of ongoing nationwide efforts to reduce road carnage.
“The driver was tested and found to be under the influence of alcohol while operating the bus. He is currently detained at Mpigi Police Station and will appear in court tomorrow to answer charges of driving under the influence of alcohol,” SP Kananura said.
He explained that the incident comes amid intensified “Arrive Alive” road safety operations, which include routine alcohol testing of drivers at checkpoints across the country as traffic increases during the festive and campaign period.
“The testing of bus drivers at our checkpoints is part of our ongoing ‘Arrive Alive’ operations as we are in a period of increased traffic on the roads. We strongly warn and caution all motorists against drinking and driving. Our checkpoints across the country are fully active and continuously testing drivers,” he added.
Police urged all road users to exercise responsibility and prioritize safety.
“Say no to drink and driving. Your safety and that of other road users matters,” SP Kananura emphasized.
Ziringura is expected to appear in court today, Monday, December 1, to face charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol.
