The government has announced plans to compensate traders whose properties were destroyed during recent floods in Kampala.
The announcement was made by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki during a meeting with traders at City Hall on Monday, organized by Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.
Buzeki disclosed that she had met with Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to discuss urgent relief measures.
“Yesterday I met the Prime Minister and she asked me to get a list of all those who were affected by the Kampala floods,” Buzeki said.
During the engagement, it was agreed that each affected arcade should submit the names of its representatives along with a full list of affected traders.
These will be harmonized with the KCCA-appointed compensation team, headed by Ms. Sheilah Burungi, Director of Gender and Social Services.
The lists were required to be submitted on Monday to facilitate prompt compensation.
TV presenter and trader Annet Nambooze, popularly known as Anatalia Ozze, urged authorities to ensure the compensation reaches the genuinely affected traders.
She explained how the floods had affected her business despite having a pending loan with Stanbic Bank.
“Do not bring politics into this matter. We need to be compensated, and the real affected traders must receive support,” she said.
Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago also called on the government to support traders, noting the urgent need for financial assistance.
He urged the Bank of Uganda to provide loans that will help traders rebuild their businesses.
However, traders called for a halt to ongoing construction along the Nakivubo Drainage Channel, which they claim is the root cause of the floods.
The meeting was attended by KCCA officials, city technical staff, and representatives of affected traders.
Officials assured traders that the compensation process would be handled transparently and efficiently to help them recover from the devastating floods.
