Family, friends, and opposition politicians are set to gather at Lubaga Cathedral today for a special Holy Mass to pray for the health of jailed veteran opposition leader Kiiza Besigye.
The prayers, organized by Besigye’s family, will take place at exactly 2:00PM under the theme drawn from Matthew 25:35–37: “I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.”
According to the family, the mass is intended to pray for Besigye, all prisoners, and the sick, amid growing concern over his reported deteriorating health while in detention.
Besigye, together with his aide , was arrested on November 16, 2024, in Kenya and later handed over to Ugandan security authorities.
On November 21, he was arraigned before a military court in Kampala and charged with treason alongside . He was subsequently remanded to Luzira Prison.
Since his remand, Besigye has reportedly faced recurring health challenges. On several occasions, prison authorities have transferred him from Luzira Prison to outside medical facilities for treatment.
His wife, , along with other opposition leaders, has repeatedly called on the government to grant him access to specialized medical care.
However, the Uganda Prisons Service has maintained that his condition is manageable and that he is receiving appropriate medical attention.
Today’s mass is expected to draw political leaders, supporters, and members of the public in a show of solidarity, as calls for his release continues.
