President Museveni has expressed outrage over what he described as deep-seated corruption within State House, revealing that some individuals have been extorting money from citizens in exchange for presenting their petitions directly to him.
Speaking candidly, Museveni said he had learned of the scam in which people allegedly paid as much as Shs 30 million to have their letters or concerns brought to his attention.
“There are people who are paying money 30 million you take [it] and make sure the President sees this letter. And it’s true, when I would see it, I would answer and give a solution. The bringer of the letter is paid here,” Museveni disclosed.
He added that many of those involved in the racket have since died, but the culture of bribery had already corrupted the system.
“Now the system is dead, rotten people,” the President said, noting that the matter was brought to his attention by his daughter, Natasha.
Museveni said some officials had, over the years, come forward to confess their involvement in wrongdoing, driven by the principles of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
“Of course, in the end, we get information because NRM is a benevolent group vicious, but you don’t hurt people. So these people, who find bad things when they get along the way, they say, ‘Why are we doing this?’ and they come and report themselves,” he said.
The president’s comments add to growing public concern over corruption in government offices, with his revelation suggesting that even the highest office in the land is not immune.
