The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) has replaced the Annual Membership Certificate (AMC) with an Annual Practicing License (APL) in a move aimed at strengthening standards in pharmacy practice across the country.
In a general notice dated 11th March 2026, the Society announced that the new Annual Practicing License will now be issued to all fully subscribed PSU members who hold valid registration certificates as pharmacists in Uganda.
According to Stephen Lutoti, the change is intended to improve professionalism and ensure pharmacists operate within regulated standards.
Dr. Lutoti said the new licensing framework will help the Society “secure the highest practicable standards in pharmacy practice.”
He explained that pharmacists working in pharmacies, industries, and hospitals will also be required to obtain a Certificate of Practice (CoP) for the premises where they operate, in addition to the Annual Practicing License.
“No licensure of these premises and professional practice in these premises should be done without a valid Certificate of Practice issued by the PSU. The same should be displayed in the premises to which they refer and the holder must diligently perform his or her duties as per contract executed,” Dr. Lutoti said.
The Society further warned that both the Annual Practicing License and Certificate of Practice may be revoked or suspended if a pharmacist breaches the required standards of pharmacy practice or violates the professional code of conduct in Uganda.
PSU said the changes are part of efforts to strengthen regulation of the profession and ensure safe and ethical pharmaceutical services to the public.
